My Store Manager insisted he got this photo printed and put on display!

This has been nothing but a surreal week in my world.  It started off as normal really, with the usual mix of lectures, and not attending them, and dossing around college having a damn good time. The highlight would of had to be Wednesday night though, for numerous reasons.

The National Student Media Awards were held at the Mansion House on Wednesday evening, and as you may or may not of known, I was nominated for “Radio DJ of the Year”, which was a total thrill and honour for me to get! The feeling of being shortlisted was nothing but amazing; I seen it as one of the best seven student radio folk in this country. A few weeks later, the list of nominee’s were released, which put me then as one of the best five DJ’s in the country. Even better! Being nominated then lead onto to the fact I had to attend the award ceremony which as a total lover of getting all dolled up and having a night out in town, was a total bonus! I adore anything like that; mainly because it beats the idea of going to a local pub and drinking yourself to death, then wolfing down the traditional chipper or Chinese on the way home, depending on the mood of the evening. I must say, this is very unusual. I usually cannot shut up talking, whether that is online or in person, I just have this ability, which I believe I inherited from my father, to just talk until the cows come home. But this week, I have managed to remain relatively quiet. It may be a bad way to begin my 19th year on this here planet, but I have numerous reasons I suppose. Nothing bad, but nothing much good either.

To summarise it in about a paragraph may be slightly difficult, but I like the challenge. This weeks achievements (and shortcomings) have included turning 19 without any deformities, got pretty drunk as a result, and still, no deformities. I came out to my parents this week, which I originally regretting but as the week progressed things became relatively normal. I met with my co-workers for a month of the summer at the first meeting of the Open FM team (www.openfm.ie), and really enjoyed being with them and I really cannot wait to start working with them for 30 days, not 10 days, but 30 days on a frequency modulated signal across Dublin. I also managed to single handedly mess up one particular friendship with someone, due to the fact that, ironically and contrary to the above statement, I couldn’t keep my mouth shut, and as a result I have just felt numb and upset for a majority of the week. I also discovered that this week I am not the best DJ on DCUfm, that accolade goes to the wonderful and most deserving of people, Vanessa Monaghan. I didn’t get a commendation however, which riled me a little bit, but I can now proudly say that I am the Third Best DJ in DCU! Congratulations must be in order for the Media Production Society of DCU, which is the society over DCUfm. At the Board of Irish Clubs & Society Awards on Wednesday night, they took the award of Most Improved Society (which they can add to the trophy they gained at the DCU C&S Awards too). Also, the DCUfm website, designed by my good friend Steve Conlon also won Best Website (which they can add to the trophy they gained at the DCU C&S Awards too). So in that case, it has been a good week with some hints of bad.

Next week will begin the home stretch of year one of college life. I can easily say, despite several knocks and bashes over that time, that is has so far been the best year of my life, but I shall talk about that more when I review my year in a week or two. Next week will see me attempt to get into the swing of academic work by starting my American Political System essay. Then on Tuesday I will be attending Macbeth with one of my good friends, who doesn’t have a blog, so I can’t link her, and then the biggest event of my year, which will be the National Student Media Awards, or the Smedias, in the Mansion House on Wednesday! I am now nominated for Radio DJ of the Year, so I can only pray wish and hope to every spiritual being that I have some luck and I can pop that lovely award onto my mantle piece along with my stuffed dead budgie (which I need to collect).

And on that note, I bid ye adieu.

I am having a moment right now. I have realised I have less than 10 shows left on DCUfm. That is only 15 hours of radio left for me. 15? FIF-TEEN!? My contracted amount of hours in Marks & Spencer is 15 hours. So I essentially have one week of work left over the course of the next mont, doing the one thing I totally adore doing. I dislike this.

As I may or may not of mentioned a few hundred times, I have been shortlisted for a National Student Media Award for Radio DJ of the Year. As someone who I work with  who never listened to my show reacted when she heard this, “Shit, you must be good at it”. As I keep saying, I am technically one of the best 7 best student radio DJ’s in this country. That is such a good feeling. I currently have confidence in bucketloads in myself, so if I am apparently one of the best, I cannot let this go away.

Following on from yesterdays blog post, which was describing the feeling I get when radio goes well for me, I feel this is worth a mention.

Laptop is broken, I only have my desktop to use which I don’t like, and I got my iPhone. Wifi in DCU is rubbish, and some parts of some rooms won’t pick up any Wifi. I knew that today, the shortlist for the Student Media Awards, or Smedias, would be published. Before I even got a connection to the internet, I started getting texts congratulating me on my apparent nomination! I was totally gob-smacked! It was another two hours before I could go and see it with my own eyes!

The image was stolen from fellow nominee, Vanessa Monaghan’s blog, by the way!

I yet again have got the great feeling of, this is why I do this and this is making it all worth it. Obviously, it would be the best feeling in the world to win that award next month, but being shortlisted for it puts me as one of the 7 best student radio DJ’s in the country. I am REALLY chuffed with that!

And here is yet another ego trip for you guys to enjoy! from my little 30 min bit on DCUfm 🙂
